Deck Builder in Roanoke, VA

Plan the Structure, Use, and Exposure Together

A deck or covered outdoor space has to fit the property, the house, and the way the space will be used. Size and appearance matter, but so do structure, attachment, stairs, rails, drainage, sun, weather exposure, access, utilities, and local approvals.

Discuss a Deck Project Call Wohlford Contracting

New Deck, Replacement, or Covered Outdoor Space?

New deck

A new structure starts with location, size, elevation, access from the house, stairs, rails, material preferences, and how the space should be used.

Deck replacement

Do not assume the existing framing, footings, ledger, stairs, or rails can remain. Their condition and suitability need to be evaluated before the replacement scope is set.

Covered or screened space

Adding a roof or enclosure changes the planning conversation. Structure, drainage, electrical work, lighting, ceiling finishes, door access, and connection to the existing home may all be involved.

Decisions to Resolve Before Comparing Proposals

  • Approximate footprint, elevation, and intended use
  • Connection to the house and access from interior rooms
  • Stair location, landings, rails, and gates
  • Wood, composite, or other material preferences
  • Roof, screen, lighting, fan, or receptacle needs
  • Demolition and disposal of an existing structure
  • Landscaping, grading, drainage, and restoration limits
  • Permit, plan, HOA, and utility-location responsibilities

Photos of the house and yard, a rough sketch, and the property address will make the first conversation more useful. See the residential remodeling hub for Wohlford’s broader planning approach.

Verify the Contractor and Ask for Relevant Examples

Wohlford Contracting was founded in 2004 and holds Virginia Class A contractor license 2705145880 with a residential building classification. Verify the current license through Virginia DPOR.

Published client feedback provides evidence about the company relationship and work experience. During the fit conversation, ask whether project examples or references relevant to your planned deck or covered-space scope are available.

Deck Builder Questions

How long does a deck project take?

There is no single reliable duration. Design, approvals, structure, size, materials, site access, weather, inspections, and current scheduling all affect timing.

Which decking material is best?

The right choice depends on appearance, maintenance expectations, heat, exposure, budget, availability, and the full system being built. Compare more than the surface board alone.

Can part of an existing deck remain?

Possibly, but only after the retained structure is evaluated and the new design is defined. A proposal should state exactly what remains and what is replaced.

Will permits be required?

Many structural deck and covered-space projects require permits, plans, setbacks, or inspections. Requirements depend on the property and final scope.

Start With Photos and the Property Address
